Privacy

DC Burners is a volunteer-run, community nonprofit. We take your privacy seriously and we keep things simple. This policy explains what we collect, why we collect it, and what we do with it.

external data

What we collect

When you create an account, we collect:

Your first and last name
Your email address
Your playa name (optional)
Your phone number (optional)

When you submit a group or event listing, we collect the content of that submission: the name, description, location, photos, and any other details you provide. This information may be displayed publicly on the site.

When you make a container reservation, your reservation details (name, contact info, what you're shipping) are stored in our system. Payment is processed entirely through PayPal. We never see, store, or handle your credit card or bank information. PayPal's own privacy policy governs how they handle your payment data.

Automatically collected information: Like most websites, our server and WordPress installation log basic technical data when you visit, including IP addresses, browser type, and pages viewed. This is standard server behavior and is not used for tracking or advertising.

What We Do Not Do

We do not sell your information to anyone, ever.
We do not use your data for advertising.
We do not share your personal information with third parties except as described below.
We do not run ads on this site.

Third-Party Services

We use a small number of external services to run the site:

Google Analytics is used to understand how people use this site. It collects anonymized data about page visits, traffic sources, device types, and general location (city/region level, not precise location). This data is aggregated and does not identify you personally. Google Analytics uses cookies to track sessions. You can opt out of Google Analytics tracking across all sites using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

PayPal handles all payment processing for the container program. When you pay through PayPal, you are subject to PayPal's privacy policy. We receive confirmation that a payment was made, but we do not receive your full payment details.

Google Workspace powers our email. When we send you a transactional email (like a registration confirmation or a notification about your submission), it routes through Google's infrastructure.

None of these services receive more of your data than they need to do their job.

Internal Data

Cookies

This site uses two types of cookies:

Functional cookies: WordPress uses cookies to keep you logged in and to maintain basic site functionality. These are essential for the site to work. If you log out, the session cookies are cleared.

Analytics cookies: Google Analytics uses cookies to collect anonymized data about how visitors use the site. These cookies do not identify you personally. You can opt out using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or by using your browser's privacy settings to block third-party cookies.

We do not use advertising cookies or sell cookie data to anyone.

Data Security

We use industry-standard hosting and take reasonable precautions to protect your data. No system is perfectly secure, but we do not store payment information, we keep sensitive data to a minimum, and we use encrypted connections throughout the site.

Your Rights

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data at any time by emailing us at info@dcburners.org. If you want your account removed, we will delete it along with any personal information tied to it. Content you submitted that is already publicly visible (like an approved group or event listing) may remain on the site in a depersonalized form.

Children and Minors

You may browse this site at any age. To create an account, you must be 18 or older, or have parental or guardian permission. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 without verified parental consent. If a parent or guardian believes their child's personal information has been submitted without consent, contact us at info@dcburners.org and we will remove it promptly.

Changes to This Policy

If we make meaningful changes to this policy, we will update the date at the top and post the revised version here. For significant changes, we may also send a notice to registered members.

Users

Who Can Use This Site

This site is open to everyone. You can browse events, groups, and community information without an account.

By creating an account, you confirm that you are 18 years of age or older, or that you have the permission of a parent or legal guardian to use this site. If you are under 18 and do not have parental permission, please do not create an account.

By registering, you also confirm that the information you provide is accurate.

Your Account

You are responsible for keeping your login credentials secure. Do not share your account with others. If you believe your account has been compromised, contact us at info@dcburners.org right away.

We may suspend or remove accounts that violate these terms, are used for spam or abuse, or that we reasonably believe are being used in bad faith. We will make good-faith efforts to notify you before taking action except where immediate action is necessary.

Submitting Content

When you submit a group listing, event listing, or any other content to the site, you are affirming that:

The content is accurate and genuinely represents your group or event.
You have the right to publish any photos you upload. Everyone pictured must have agreed to appear on a public website.
The content does not violate any law or the rights of any other person.
The content aligns with the 10 Principles of Burning Man, including Radical Inclusion, Civic Responsibility, and Participation.

All submitted content is subject to review and approval before it goes live. We may reject or remove content at our discretion if it does not meet community standards, is inaccurate, or is otherwise inappropriate. We are not required to explain every editorial decision, but we will always try to act fairly.

By submitting content, you grant DC Burners a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to display that content on this website and in related community communications. You retain ownership of what you create.

Container program

The container program transports personal items between the DC/DMV area and Burning Man. Reservations are subject to the specific terms, pricing, and policies published on the container reservation pages, which may be updated each year.

You must be 18 years of age or older to make a container reservation. This is a legal requirement, not a community policy. A container reservation is a binding agreement, and minors cannot enter binding contracts under Virginia law. The reservation holder must be an adult regardless of who the items belong to.

Key points that never change:

Payment is processed through PayPal. By completing a payment, you agree to PayPal's terms of service as well.
DC Burners is not responsible for loss, damage, or theft of items in transit, though we take reasonable precautions and take this responsibility seriously.
Prohibited items (including hazardous materials, weapons, and anything illegal) are never permitted and may result in your reservation being cancelled without a refund.
Lithium batteries must be declared at the time of reservation. Failure to disclose lithium batteries may result in removal of your items from the container and forfeiture of your reservation fee.

Refund and cancellation terms are posted on the container program pages and may vary by year.

Community

Community Standards

This site exists to serve the DMV burner community. We expect everyone who uses it to treat other community members with respect. We will not tolerate harassment, hate speech, or behavior that is contrary to the 10 Principles of Burning Man.

We are not responsible for interactions between community members that happen off this site, but we reserve the right to remove accounts associated with conduct that harms the community, whether or not it happens on dcburners.org directly.

No Warranties

This site is provided as-is. We are a volunteer organization and we do our best, but we cannot guarantee the site will always be available, error-free, or perfectly up to date. We are not responsible for any losses arising from your use of the site or from temporary unavailability.

Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, DC Burners, its directors, officers, volunteers, and affiliates shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of this site or participation in any DC Burners program. Our total liability for any claim arising from these terms shall not exceed the amount you paid to DC Burners in the twelve months preceding the claim.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless DC Burners and its directors, officers, and volunteers from any claims, damages, or costs (including legal fees) arising from your use of the site, your submitted content, or your violation of these terms.

Changes to These Terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the date at the top. Continued use of the site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised terms. For significant changes, we will make a reasonable effort to notify registered members.

Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Any disputes shall be resolved in the appropriate courts of Virginia.
