Destruction of Bruce Monroe Park TOMORROW

Groups audience:

Tomorrow morning the DC council will be voting to declare the park at
Georgia/Irving/Columbia Rd as surplus property to make way for a developer
to build a 120ft tall building in addition to other buildings on the site.

Whatever space that is left after that (currently down to 40%) has not been
officially committed to be anything but "park or other public uses" and
will be reconfigured so that nothing of what is there now will remain
intact.

Please call the council, send email or letters, and/or show up to the
hearing building:

Tuesday Nov 29 at 10am in the Wilson Building
1350 Pennsylvania Ave NW, room 412.

Phil Mendelson, Chairman: (202) 724-8032

Brianne Nadeau, Ward 1: (202) 724-8181

Mary Cheh, Committee Chairman: (202) 724-8062

Muriel Bowser, Mayor: (202) 727-2643

Here's what to tell them:

*Why you and your family love the park* and want it to stay the same size
it is now

*What you don't like about the development* and the problems it will cause
-- traffic, parking, density, scale, etc.

*How the city's flawed process left out large segments of the community* and
does not reflect your thoughts and concerns

*Postpone making a decision about the park. *Let the community weigh in
about the future of the park.

If you are planning on speaking at the meeting in person email your name,
address, and that you wish to testify at the hearing on the Bruce Monroe
surplus to cow@dccouncil.usas soon as possible.

1. Use this email tool to contact our Councilmembers and Mayor. There’s a
sample email in the form, which you can modify however you like:
http://www.activist.one/ brucemonroe
/
Please change the subject line so
staff will know you’re a real person. In addition you may add your own
thoughts to the letter.

2. Call one or more key people on the Council or Mayor’s office. See more
info here: http://www.savebrucemonroepark.org/urgent_call_the_dc_council_

So, I was on the other side of this earlier in the debate about this, but
I'm now reluctantly in favor of the proposed development. Matt and I live
right across from the park and will be very sad to lose it.

However, it's important to note: the purpose is to redevelop Park Morton
public housing, where residents have been living in sub-standard
apartments. The city has repeatedly broken promises to the Park Morton
residents and (although I am personally very frustrated with the lack of
community engagement and, in all honesty, downright insulting way that some
government reps have misrepresented aspects of this project to neighbors)
at this point I believe to start from square one finding a site would be a
really unfair way to treat our neighbors at Park Morton, who are
overwhelmingly black and residents of the area for longer than average, as
a lot of long-time residents have been pushed out by gentrification.

Lesley,
The original purpose of this park was to serve as the playground for Bruce Monroe school- which it still does. It also serves the local community and provides much needed park space in the area of dc. There are many vacant properties in school which could be used to provide the much needed public housing problems. However, destroying park space is to solve a few units of one problem while creating another (taking scarce park space from children and local residents- including those disadvantaged residents you are trying to help in destroying this park).

Yes, there are many public works projects which should be undertaken in the area and in the country. However, if you would like to make a real and tangible difference in a public works project, in the vanishing public spaces and negative aspects of gentrification in dc - act now! Save Bruce Monroe park! This is an uphill battle against a mayor who wants to bulldoze a park and give away half a city block to a developer - reneg on the promise made to Bruce Monroe school that this wild be their play space... And to subsidize the developer's actions in doing so at the expense of residents' quality of life. This is real, this is now, and the hearing is today at 10 am. Comments accepted supposedly through the week, but the goalposts keep getting moved so please call/email asap!!!

Amy- if you want this to have a prayer of occurring, you must stop this developer first. Existing plans keep changing, but Building size keeps increasing, and is up to 60% lot size already - how much of the remaining space will be left for park space once paths, etc are laid out?

Amy,

That petition is a joke and was created by a housing lobbyist organization
and only refers to the park as "vacant land nearby" what a farce. Specifically
Jews for justice. In this case justice for who exactly? Not the current
residents of the neighborhood.

Please help save our public space, a small urban oasis amidst the concrete
jungle,
Amalie

Whoa, now hold it, I know Rebecca and she is a really earnest, dedicated,
awesome person, and so is the org JUFJ. They fight for things like
affordable housing, paid family leave. There are honest and wonderful
people on both sides of this issue.

I am praying they build it and the sooner the better… I live 2 blocks from that park and trust me it will be a blessing for everyone in the neighborhood.
