Possible Burner Takeover opportunity - are you interested?

Groups audience:

Hey all!

We have an opportunity to partner with the Golden Triangle BID through
their Farragut Friday programming on Friday, June 29th.

I’m putting out feelers for whether we have enough interest and folks who’d
like to show up for a Burner Takeover that day. It’d stretch from about
11am to 11pm.

It’d be an opportunity for theme camps to come out, probably only one sound
system (maybe two, if both quiet and facing opposite directions), artists,
workshops, etc.

We’d have to provide insurance, which is something I can run by the team at
FirePony Creative Society, but there’s some funding available to help with
that and also to help with some programming.

What do you think? Are you interested? Would you want to help coordinate
this? Please comment here, but more importantly, email me at patty.simonton
at burningman dot org if you’d like to get involved to help make this
happen.

Thanks!

Patty

So, just to clarify for myself and others, since I'm not familiar with this
space or these programs - this would be an outdoor party in a green space
in downtown DC, yes? Like a warmer, less structurally intricate
Constellation?

Yep. Kind of like a Figment or even Catharsis on the Mall. Outdoors, in
Farragut Square Park.

Thanks for the invite Patty and for the question in reply Abby.

The thing I’m wondering is if there will be any flexibility on the date as
the Farragut Friday series runs for a few months and 6/29 overlaps with PEX
Summer Fest and I am guessing quite a few of us may be there, likely myself
as well. If it is the only possible date, and I’m not at PEX, I’d be
interested in being involved.

Patty, I see you mentioned that the event would likely be from 11am-11pm. I
know that usually Farragut Fridays go from 9am-5pm and are often followed
by a film screening during he month of June. Guessing they are open to
evening activities which I think would be super fun. I would love to see
some hooping and flow arts in the park at a takeover day. Think this would
be more like a mini Figment.

My main question is about the date. Is the 29th the only option? Wondering
if there is a possibility of it not being on a Friday in June when there
are so many weekend events Burners may be at like Nomadico, Wickerman, PEX,
FlowJam.

I’ve worked with the Golden Triangle folks before to help get the word out
about their Farragut Friday program through Free in DC. The series takes
outside during the day on Fridays in Farragut Square Park between the
Farragut north and Farragut west metro stations where 17th & Connecticut
meet network K St and Eye St NW.

They usually set up a lounge area and work space area with free outdoor
WiFi and they have a special presentation around lunchtime each week like a
cooking demo or puppies/ adopt a pet. They usually have a shade structure
set up with Golden Triangle folks there to answer questions and they also
set up chairs and tables set up and food trucks are in the area.

I image if Burners were to do a takeover that there would be some more fun
stuff set up in the park but I believe the space would be limited to the
available grassy area there in the park. Excited that we would be able to
stay later in the evening when the sun goes down. Would it be possible to
do fire spinning and LED hooping in the evening?

This year the Golden Triangle is also participating with the Renwick’s new
exhibit opening on the 30th “No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man” with
six outdoor installations being placed in the Golden Triangle so there may
be extra excitement about a Burner takeover with the exhibit coming to DC.
There will be a free walking tour of those on March 30 at 11am if anyone is
interested. I’m planning to attend. Details are on the Renwick’s website.

On another Burner and Golden Triangle connection, I am wondering if the
Burner owned business Eye St Massage may want to participate in a Burner
takeover in some way? Pam Moyer’s space is located right there in the
office building across from Farragut Sq and is a part of the Golden
Triangle. I know that they have participated in Farragut Fridays in the
past with mini chair massages, though I’m not sure if that would fit in
with theme of or be best on the same Farragut Friday as the Burner takeover
day if we want to be giving the energy of an actual Burn, in which case no
business or commerce may want to be involved.

In any case, I think this could be a very fun thing to bring to downtown DC
if we can coordinate it and get enough people who have flexible schedules
during the day and eve on Fridays. I’m happy to participate if I’m in town!
I’m also happy to help promote the event if it happens. Please keep us
posted please Patty.

Thanks, Amy.

Lots of good info here. And yes, the reason why it's even an option is
exactly because of the Renwick exhibit. :)

From the date options they gave us, June 29th worked best, though they
recently gave us the opportunity to have June 8th, which still clashes with
Nomadico. The September option on 9/14 is simply too close to Burning Man
to be reasonable. They've got a bunch of other programming lined up, as you
said, so they're fitting us in.

The way I look at it, from an event planning perspective, is that we'll
pick the date that works best from our available options AND around the
schedules of those who are going to put in the time and energy to make the
event happen.

It's a pretty small park. I don't expect it will be a good fit for domes
and massive shade structures. I'd recommend folks to think about playful
temporary art, workshops, and fun ways to engage with the daytime park
folks. The less infrastructure, the less permitting requirements, the less
legwork required. I'm going for simple here.

Again, I'm specifically looking for people who want to take on the
responsibilities of coordinating this fun event. Are YOU interested in
learning how to work with NPS and the BID? This is a great started event to
make that happen - you'll have lots of support! If we're going to move
forward, we need to put together a budget extremely soon, and start to lock
in at least some of what's expected.

Please reach out if you'd like to help make this happen. patty.simonton at
burningman dot org

Thanks,
Patty

Hi all,
I've worked with Golden Triangle for quite a few years now since our Eye St studio (as Amy mentioned) is across the street and we've offered free chair massage on many of the Farragut Fridays. I'd like to share some info that may be helpful. The park is quite small. I've included a link so you can jump right to it. You'l get an idea of size by comparing it to the other blocks. The pedestrian pathway is like a big 'X' through the park with a big statue in the middle. The areas that will be available for set up then are the 4 triangular green areas. I've also included a link to GT's Farragut Friday's page to see a few pics. If they do their typical set up the outdoor office space will be on the east triangle so that space may not be available. They typically provide their yellow 10x10 pop-up shade structures and tables if needed. I doubt they have an idea of how burner events usually go. I recommend visiting the site in advance. Bear in mind there are trees in the park so even if it looks like sufficient space on a map, it may not be the case in reality. So, I don't think they will be able to accommodate large structures. Once I did see a large interactive exhibit that looked like giant legos building blocks that people could use to construct stuff. That was pretty cool. I think something like that could work very well.
Regarding sound - they used to have a live band on Thursday afternoons for just a couple of hours during the summer a few years ago but there were noise complaints from some of the offices so they had to stop that sadly. So, if anyone is thinking of bringing a sound camp, that will probably not fly during work hours. The Farragut Fridays picnic itself is usually 12-2 so it might be acceptable to have music in that window. Maybe again in the evening after work hours...? This would be very unusual for them to have an all day happening. This will be interesting to see.
Btw, parking is limited. The food trucks are normally on the west side street and a few on the east side street. K and I Streets on the north and south sides of the park are for moving traffic. If you need parking space, they will block something off for you but I don't think they'll be able to give a ton of space because the city buses and tourist buses stop on the east side on south side of the park.

We are offering our chair massages on May 11, June 15, July 27, July 29, Aug 31, Sep 28 and for Bike to Work day on May 18, so I don't think we'll be participating in this event, but if you do, I'll of course be by! And you're welcome to say "hi" to us too!
Pam

Thanks, Amy.

Lots of good info here. And yes, the reason why it's even an option is exactly because of the Renwick exhibit. :)

From the date options they gave us, June 29th worked best, though they recently gave us the opportunity to have June 8th, which still clashes with Nomadico. The September option on 9/14 is simply too close to Burning Man to be reasonable. They've got a bunch of other programming lined up, as you said, so they're fitting us in.

The way I look at it, from an event planning perspective, is that we'll pick the date that works best from our available options AND around the schedules of those who are going to put in the time and energy to make the event happen.

It's a pretty small park. I don't expect it will be a good fit for domes and massive shade structures. I'd recommend folks to think about playful temporary art, workshops, and fun ways to engage with the dayt ime park folks. The less infrastructure, the less permitting requirements, the less legwork required. I'm going for simple here.

Again, I'm specifically looking for people who want to take on the responsibilities of coordinating this fun event. Are YOU interested in learning how to work with NPS and the BID? This is a great started event to make that happen - you'll have lots of support! If we're going to move forward, we need to put together a budget extremely soon, and start to lock in at least some of what's expected.

Please reach out if you'd like to help make this happen.  patty.simonton at burningman dot org

Thanks,
Patty

The thing I’m wondering is if there will be any flexibility on the date as the Farragut Friday series runs for a few months and 6/29 overlaps with PEX Summer Fest and I am guessing quite a few of us may be there, likely myself as well. If it is the only possible date, and I’m not at PEX, I’d be interested in being involved.
Patty, I see you mentioned that the event would likely be from 11am-11pm. I know that usually Farragut Fridays go from 9am-5pm and are often followed by a film scr eening during he month of June. Guessing they are open to evening activities which I think would be super fun. I would love to see some hooping and flow arts in the park at a takeover day. Think this would be more like a mini Figment.
My main question is about the date. Is the 29th the only option? Wondering if there is a possibility of it not being on a Friday in June when there are so many weekend events Burners may be at like Nomadico, Wickerman, PEX, FlowJam.
I’ve worked with the Golden Triangle folks before to help get the word out about their Farragut Friday program through Free in DC. The series takes outside during the day on Fridays in Farragut Square Park between the Farragut north and Farragut west metro stations where 17th & Connecticut meet network K St and Eye St NW.
They usually set up a lounge area and work space area with free outdoor WiFi and they have a special presentation around lunchtime each week like a cooking demo or puppies/ adopt a pet. They usually have a shade structure set up with Golden Triangle folks there to answer questions and they also set up chairs and tables set up and food trucks are in the area.
I image if Burners were to do a takeover that there would be some more fun stuff set up in the park but I believe the space would be limited to the available grassy area there in the park. Excited that we would be able to stay later in the evening when the sun goes down. Would it be possible to do fire spinning and LED hooping in the evening?
This year the Golden Triangle is also participating with the Renwick’s new exhibit opening on the 30th “No Spectators: The Art of Burning Man” with six outdoor installations being placed in the Golden Triangle so there may be extra excitement about a Burner takeover with the exhibit coming to DC. There will be a free walking tour of those on March 30 at 11am if anyone is interested. I’m planning to attend. Details are on the Renwick’s website.
On another Burner and Golden Triangle connecti on, I am wonderi ng if the Burner owned business Eye St Massage may want to participate in a Burner takeover in some way? Pam Moyer’s space is located right there in the office building across from Farragut Sq and is a part of the Golden Triangle. I know that they have participated in Farragut Fridays in the past with mini chair massages, though I’m not sure if that would fit in with theme of or be best on the same Farragut Friday as the Burner takeover day if we want to be giving the energy of an actual Burn, in which case no business or commerce may want to be involved.
In any case, I think this could be a very fun thing to bring to downtown DC if we can coordinate it and get enough people who have flexible schedules during the day and eve on Fridays. I’m happy to participate if I’m in town! I’m also happy to help promote the event if it happens. Please keep us posted please Patty.

Hey all!

We have an opportunity to partner with the Golden Triangle BID through their Farragut Friday programming on Friday, June 29th.

I’m putting out feelers for whether we have enough interest and folks who’d like to show up for a Burner Takeover that day. It’d stretch from about 11am to 11pm.

It’d be an opportunity for theme camps to come out, probably only one sound system (maybe two, if both quiet and facing opposite directions), artists, workshops, etc.

We’d have to provide insurance, which is something I can run by the team at FirePony Creative Society, but there’s some funding available to help with that and also to help with some programming.

What do you think? Are you interested? Would you want to help coordinate this? Please comment here, but more importantly, email me at patty.simonton at burningman dot org if you’d like to get involved to help make this happen.

Thanks!

Hi All,

What about a burner bike art crawl?

Just take over the streets with burner bikes go to each of the art pieces.

They have these in Vegas once. Called blinky man.
